Amazon vs Flipkart: where should an Indian brand sell first?
It's the first question almost every Indian brand asks us: Amazon or Flipkart? The honest answer is that most brands end up on both — but where you start matters, because your first channel absorbs your attention, your inventory and your ad budget. Here's how we help sellers decide.
The short version
If your category is electronics, books, or you're chasing the widest possible reach and a strong advertising toolkit, Amazon is usually the first move. If you sell fashion, lifestyle or value-priced products for tier-2 and tier-3 India — or you want lower fees and festive-event firepower — Flipkart often wins. The rest of this post is how to pressure-test that against your own numbers.
Reach and audience
Amazon has the broadest national reach and a shopper base that skews slightly more urban and premium. Flipkart is neck-and-neck overall and genuinely stronger in fashion (via Myntra in the same group) and in deeper India during its Big Billion Days event. Neither is "bigger" in a way that decides it for you — your category and price point matter more than raw traffic.
Category strengths
| Category | Tends to favour |
|---|---|
| Electronics & accessories | Amazon |
| Books & media | Amazon |
| Fashion & lifestyle | Flipkart (+ Myntra) |
| Home & kitchen | Even — test both |
| Value / budget products | Flipkart |
Fees and economics
Both charge referral (category) commissions, closing/fixed fees and shipping. Amazon's fee schedule is broad and category-specific; Flipkart is often marginally cheaper in several categories and runs aggressive seller incentives around events. The real economics, though, come down to your fulfilment choice and return rate — not the headline commission. Model your net margin per order on each before you commit.
Advertising
Amazon's Sponsored Products, Brands and Display ecosystem is more mature and gives you finer control over targeting and reporting — an advantage if advertising will drive your growth. Flipkart's PLA and PCA ads are effective and typically less competitive on cost-per-click, which can mean cheaper early traction if you set them up well.
Logistics
- Amazon: FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) gets you the Prime badge and reliable delivery, at a storage and fulfilment cost. Easy Ship and self-ship are alternatives.
- Flipkart: F-Assured plus Flipkart's fulfilment options give you the trust badge and faster promises. Getting F-Assured is one of the biggest conversion levers on the platform.
How to actually decide
Score your own situation on four questions: Which platform indexes best for your category? Where are your target customers (metro vs deeper India)? Which fee-plus-fulfilment model leaves you a healthier net margin? And which advertising system fits how you plan to grow? Whichever wins three of four is your launch channel. Then expand to the second within a quarter, because the brands that plateau are usually the ones that stayed single-channel too long.
