How to reduce return rates on Indian marketplaces
Returns are the silent margin killer in Indian e-commerce. A great-looking sales number can hide a return rate that quietly wipes out profit — especially in fashion, and especially with cash-on-delivery. The good news: most returns trace back to a handful of fixable causes. Here's how we bring them down.
First, know your two return types
Customer returns (the buyer received it and sent it back) and RTO — return to origin (the order never got delivered, common with COD). They have different fixes, so measure them separately before you act.
The big causes — and the fixes
1. Size and fit (the #1 fashion cause)
Wrong size drives most fashion returns. Fixes: accurate, product-specific size charts (not a generic one), true-to-body measurements, a clear "model is wearing size…" note, and consistent sizing across your catalog so repeat buyers trust it.
2. "Not as described"
When the product doesn't match the listing, it comes back. Fixes: real, well-lit photos from multiple angles, accurate colour representation, honest descriptions of material and finish, and setting expectations rather than over-promising in the title.
3. Damage in transit
Poor packaging turns a good product into a return. Fixes: protective, right-sized packaging, fragile-item handling, and choosing couriers with better handling records for your category.
4. RTO on cash-on-delivery
COD orders fail more often — wrong address, buyer unavailable, or impulse cancellations. Fixes: address verification, nudging prepaid with small incentives, confirming high-risk orders, and using courier partners with better first-attempt delivery in your pin codes.
Operational habits that lower returns
- Review returns weekly by SKU — a spike almost always points to one listing or one batch.
- Read return reasons; the platform tells you why, and patterns appear fast.
- Fix the worst-offending listing first — a single bad SKU can drag your whole account's metrics.
- Feed learnings back into the product: recurring "small fit" returns may mean the size runs small, not that customers are wrong.
- Watch quality on every new batch — many return spikes start at the factory, not the listing.
Why it's worth the effort
Lower returns don't just save the refund — they save the forward and reverse shipping, the restocking, the damaged inventory, and the hit to your account health metrics that quietly suppress your ranking. Cutting a return rate by even a few points often does more for net profit than a new ad campaign.
