Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian D2C brands
Both Shopify and WooCommerce can run a successful Indian D2C brand — we've built on both. The right pick isn't about which is "better," it's about your stage, your team and how much control you want. Here's the honest comparison, in rupees and in practice.
The short version
Choose Shopify if you want to launch fast, hate managing infrastructure, and value reliability over total control. Choose WooCommerce if you want full ownership, custom logic, lower recurring fees at scale, and you have (or will hire) someone to maintain it.
Cost, in rupees
Shopify is a predictable monthly subscription plus payment fees — you pay more per month, but hosting, security and updates are handled. WooCommerce is technically free, but you pay for hosting, a theme, plugins, SSL and maintenance; those add up, and a poorly-hosted WooCommerce store is a false economy. For most early brands the total cost is closer than it looks — the real difference is predictable (Shopify) versus variable (WooCommerce).
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup speed | Fast | Moderate |
| Ongoing cost | Predictable subscription | Variable (hosting + plugins) |
| Control & customisation | Good, within guardrails | Complete |
| Maintenance burden | Low (managed) | Higher (self-managed) |
| Best for | Speed & reliability | Ownership & flexibility |
Payments & gateways
Both support the Indian gateways brands actually use — Razorpay, PayU, CCAvenue, Cashfree — and UPI. Shopify Payments availability varies, so many Indian stores use a third-party gateway (note Shopify's transaction fee when you do). WooCommerce plugs into any gateway directly with no platform transaction fee, which can matter at higher GMV.
Ease of use
Shopify's admin is cleaner and easier for a non-technical founder or small team to run day to day. WooCommerce gives you the full WordPress ecosystem and unlimited flexibility, but with that comes plugin management, updates and the occasional compatibility issue — fine with support, painful without it.
Scaling
Shopify scales smoothly (up to Shopify Plus) without you thinking about servers. WooCommerce can scale just as far, but performance becomes your responsibility — good hosting, caching and a clean build are the difference between fast and frustrating at high traffic.
So which should you pick?
- Early-stage, small team, want to launch now: Shopify.
- Content-heavy, custom logic, want to own the stack, cost-sensitive at scale: WooCommerce.
- Performance-obsessed or highly bespoke: consider a headless/custom build on either.
Whichever you choose, the build quality matters more than the platform — a fast, clean, SEO-ready store outperforms a bloated one every time.
