How to write marketplace listings that actually convert

A great product with a weak listing loses to an average product with a strong one. On marketplaces, the listing is your salesperson. Here is how to make it work harder.

Titles: clear before clever

Lead with what the product is and its most-searched attribute, then brand, then key specs. Front-load the words buyers actually type. Avoid keyword-stuffing — it reads as spam and platforms increasingly penalise it. A shopper should understand exactly what they are getting in the first few words.

Images: the real decision-maker

Most buyers scan images before they read a word. Cover the essentials:

  • A clean main image on white, product filling the frame.
  • Multiple angles and a scale reference so size is obvious.
  • Lifestyle shots showing the product in use.
  • An infographic image that answers the top one or two questions at a glance.

Good images also cut returns, because buyers know what to expect — the same principle we cover in reducing return rates.

Bullets: benefits first, specs second

Each bullet should lead with a benefit and back it with a spec. “Stays cool all night — breathable cotton weave” beats “100% cotton.” Answer the questions a buyer would otherwise ask in reviews, and keep each bullet skimmable.

A+ / enhanced content

If you have Brand Registry on Amazon (or the equivalent elsewhere), use enhanced content to tell the brand story, compare your range, and pre-empt objections. It lifts conversion and average order value, and it makes your page feel trustworthy next to bigger brands.

The often-missed basics

  • Backend keywords / attributes: fill every relevant field so search can find you.
  • Accurate category and variations: wrong category buries you; clean variations keep reviews and traffic consolidated.
  • Size charts: for fashion and home, a product-specific chart is the single biggest returns-saver.

Write for the buyer first and the algorithm second — the two goals overlap more than people think. If you would like a second set of eyes, a free growth audit includes a listing review.
